British Canoeing - Bell Boat Helm Course 24th & 27th Oct-19 

Gravesham Scouts will be running a Bell Boat Helm course. 

Note: This is NOT a Scout Permit course but will enable assessment for Scout - Bell Boat AA Permit

The course will be run in two parts: 

1. Introduction to Paddlesport / Bell Boat Processes and practices – 

Thurs 24-Oct-19 19.30 – 21.30hrs Lower Grange Farm, Sandling 

2. Bell Boat Practical - training & assessment 

Sun 27-Oct-19 10.00 – 15.00hrs Allington Lock/Slipway, River Medway 

The Bell Boat Helm Award is aimed at coaches, youth leaders and others who wish to introduce and develop paddlers on Bell Boats for recreation and sport. Bell Boat Helms may operate on sheltered water including: slow moving rivers and quiet canals, small lakes or small areas of larger lakes. 

The main responsibility of the Bell Boat helm is to ensure safety for themselves and their crew and, of course, provide lots of fun and enjoyment for all. 

To be eligible for the British Canoeing Bell Boat Helm Award, you must: 

 hold a current First Aid qualification (minimum Scout First Response

o please bring a copy of your First Aid certificate with you as this is required for submission with course paperwork 

 have a working knowledge of safety & rescue using the Bell Boat 

 be over 18 years of age [candidates over 16 may attend the course and be called Trainee Helms but not hold the Bell Boat Helm Award until they are 18] 

 be competent in the practical assessment 

 be a member of British Canoeing or national Association. Bell Boat Helms must join as a basic member (minimum) in subsequent years 

The cost of the course is: 

 British Canoeing Members = £22.00 [please bring your membership card] 

 Non-Members = £35 

The course will be limited and availability will be allocated on a first come first served basis and registration will close on 19-Oct-19.
