Gravesham Scouts Watersports Open Session Success!

On the 9th May, the Gravesham Scouts Watersports team successfully hosted an open session to introduce more Scouts and Explorers to the paddling world. We had an impressive attendance of 22 young people across both the morning and afternoon sessions. During these sessions they had a go in a variety of crafts including Kayaks, Paddleboards (SUPs) and Canoes, one session even had the opportunity to go in bellboats when we were setting them up. We were very lucky with the weather and ensured that all attendees were hydrated and wearing sun cream whilst enjoying their time on the water.

As we had a good turnout from the water team too, it allowed us to help everyone on a nearly 1:1 basis! This ensured that all young people were able to participate whilst learning the basic strokes of each craft (forwards, backwards, turning around). Whilst paddling around the lakes, we heard nothing but good comments from everyone on the water which was great to see. We are hoping to run this open session again next year, in the meantime we have lots of paddling sessions available for the rest of the year, it would be great to see you all there!

Here is some information on the upcoming sessions for the rest of the year:

  • 18.07.26 – Gravesham – Leybourne Lakes – Kayaking and SUP session
  • 12.09.26 – Gravesham – Leybourne Lakes or River Medway
  • 24.10.26 – Gravesham – Leybourne Lakes or River Medway
  • 14.11.26 – Gravesham – Leybourne Lakes or River Medway
  • 05.12.26 – Gravesham – Leybourne Lakes or River Medway

On these future paddling sessions, we will be refining those paddling skills to have more control of the craft whilst still enjoying our time on the water.

If you would like to book onto the 18th July session at Leybourne Lakes, here is the link: https://onthewater.setmore.com/

Please note we will either paddle on Leybourne Lakes or one of the many launch points we use along the River Medway. This will solely depend on the weather and water conditions closer to the time. The location will be confirmed closer to the time.

For all of these events, please be assured we will be providing buoyancy aids and helmets for your young person to wear. A kit list of what to bring will be sent once booking has been made (but think, clothes, footwear and cagoule for on the water, plus a full change of clothes (including footwear and underwear), food and drink.
