Fort Amherst is Britain's largest and best-preserved Napoleonic fort. It was built in 1755–1803 as a key part of the defense of Chatham Dockyard from land attack, and was a vital defense during the Napoleonic Wars and both World Wars. The fort was enlarged and strengthened during the Napoleonic Wars, and was still in use during World War II as an Air Raid Warning command post. It was declared obsolete in 1860, but was scheduled as an ancient monument in 1959 and has since undergone restoration to make more areas accessible to the public
