What are Explorers? Explorers are young people aged between 14 – 18 years old. Explorers meet once a week and get up to loads of cool adventurous activities as well as all the basic stuff. Explorers get a chance to take part in the D of E scheme and get the chance to become a young leader.
In Gravesham we have four explorer units based in Meopham, Northfleet, Shorne and Windmill Hill which meet on a Monday evening from 7pm-9pm at their respective scout halls. Once a month the four units come together and take part in activities all together and learning skills that last a lifetime.
At the heart of Explorers is the opportunity to meet people and socialise with other young people of a similar age.
Explorers differs from Scouts in that the Unit is run by the District rather than by individual Scout Groups.
Although each District will have its own programme, activities are also put on at a County and National level allowing Explorers to mix with others their age from a wider area.
As well as all this, Explorers have the opportunity to complete awards including Activity badges, The Chief Scout’s Award, The Queen’s Scout Award, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and The Explorer Belt Award many of which are externally recognised (by potential employers, etc).
Being an Explorer is all about discovering the world on your own terms and making the most of what you have, wherever and whoever you are.
Alongside your new friends, you’ll try things you’d never get the chance to do at home or at school.
Master something you love, or try something shiny and new. If it spurs you on or stirs your interest, we’ve probably got a badge for it.
As an inclusive and values based Movement, membership is open to all those individuals who share our fundamental values, and are willing to make a commitment to them, expressed by the Promise and Law.
