Gravesham Explorers Learn Petanque

On Monday 11th March two of Gravesham Explorer Units, Phoenix and Sputnik, came together for an exciting event. A total of 33 young people gathered at Gravesend Rugby Football Club, where a team from Kent pétanque association took the reins to introduce them to the game of pétanque.

For 40 minutes, the eager explorers immersed themselves in coaching session, where the team from Kent pétanque helped hone their skills through a blend of pointing and shooting practice.

After the coaching session, armed with their newfound knowledge, the explorers were divided into teams of three, ready to face off against another group of three in a few short games of pétanque.

Once the rules were explained, the explorers quickly grasped the essentials and dived into the games with enthusiasm. The explorers played several short games, played to a score of 7 instead of the usual 13 to allow them the opportunity to engage with different opponents. Each match was all about teamwork, strategy, and enjoying some friendly competition.

Not wanting to miss out on the excitement, the leaders of the two explorer units received some tips from the coaching team. They then joined forces for a spirited game among themselves.

A big thank you to GRFC Pétanque club for generously providing their fantastic facility and equipment, and to the dedicated coaches from the Kent Pétanque Association for their time and expertise. This fun-filled evening wouldn't have been possible without their support. It was great to witness every explorer actively participating and giving their best, making it a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.

Looking ahead, the excitement continues as Apollo and Kipling gear up to try their hands at the game next week. Plus, mark your calendars for an upcoming opportunity on Sunday, April 7th, at the GRFC Pétanque Club. All explorers are invited to participate in a friendly competition. Explorers have the chance to team up with another explorer or an adult, be it a parent or grandparent, etc, for a day of competition. It's a fantastic chance to showcase their newfound skills. Best of all, explorers can join the fun for free, while there will be a nominal £3 charge for participating adults.
